Although Animal Forest is an enhanced edition of a recently released (and best-selling) N64 title, there's nothing that's old school about it. A gloriously innovative creation, it's another reminder that nobody delivers the goods with the same degree of imagination as Nintendo. At the outset, players create their very own character, who then sets off to live amongst the inhabitants of animal forest, communicating with them, making friends, and actually building up a whole social network. |
| It even becomes necessary to get a house and job, while the whole world proves completely interactive. Players can go fishing, chop trees for wood, buy new clothing, keep a pet, even play music. And because time in the game is synchronised with the Gamecube's clock, the seasons even pass realistically. Come December the decorations go up around the land! It's like a whole virtual world, brimming with activity and possibilities, a playpen that's a million light years ahead of those old Tamagotchi games. Incredibly, there are even a range of classic Nintendo NES games within, including Donkey Kong, Kuru Kuru Land, and Pinball. Animal Forest even accommodates up to four players in the game world, while those with friends who own the game can transfer their character between worlds. | | Think Pok‚mon for grown-ups, and then some |
