History:
Marsala is a fortified wine that was created in the 19th Century to ensure that the wine did not spoil/oxidize during shipping. An Englishman (Woodhouse) has been credited as the creator of Marsala. Lord Nelson carried Pellegrino Marsala on HMS victory.
Winemaking Details:
Fermentation is stopped by adding alcohol (which 'fortifies' the wine) Grape juice syrup (Sugar!) is then added - plus quality doc wine the marsala is then aged for 4 years in oak.
Regional Information:
Grapes are sourced from vineyards in the west of the island of Sicily. Marsala 'styles' range from sweet to dry and from the basic (for cooking) to the finest vintage and 'solera' for drinking.
