The plane gained notoriety after the pilot Manfred Von Richthofen was dubbed the Red Barron due to planes distinctive colouring. Richthofen shot down 80 enemy aircraft more than any other pilot but was shot down himself by a Sopwith Camel on 21st April 1918.
