The multiplayer-focused expansion pack Battlefield 1942: The Road to Rome will focus exclusively on the largely under-publicised Italian and Sicilian campaigns of WWII. Players can choose to fight on six new maps including Operation Husky (Sicily) and the battles for Anzio and Monte Cassino. Each map comes with highly detailed environments such as Italian houses, Mediterranean trees and even the Monte Cassino Monestary.

Controllable vehicles are the heart of the Battlefield 1942 experience and The Road to Rome will feature eight new vehicles in addition to the more than 30 in the original title. These include the German BF-110 and British Mosquito twin-engine fighter-bombers. Also debuting is an Italian torpedo boat as well as British and German tanks and anti-tank guns.

Though multi-player experience will be the focus of The Road to Rome, there will be a mode of unique single-player action. These levels feature improved artificial intelligence with no scripting, which means that players will get a completely different experience each time.

The original Battlefield 1942 game will be required to play The Road to Rome
